After being censored on YouTube, Oliver Stone has released his 2016 film to the public, covering Ukraine’s complex history and build up to the political unrest we see today
Ukraine. Across its eastern border is Russia and to its west-Europe. For centuries, it has been at the center of a tug-of-war between powers seeking to control its rich lands and access to the Black Sea. 2014’s Maidan Massacre triggered a bloody uprising that ousted president Viktor Yanukovych and painted Russia as the perpetrator by Western media. But was it? “Ukraine on Fire” by Igor Lopatonok provides a historical perspective for the deep divisions in the region which lead to the 2004 Orange Revolution, 2014 uprisings, and the violent overthrow of democratically elected Yanukovych. Covered by Western media as a people’s revolution, it was in fact a coup d’état scripted and staged by nationalist groups and the U.S. State Department. Investigative journalist Robert Parry reveals how U.S.-funded political NGOs and media companies have emerged since the 80s replacing the CIA in promoting America’s geopolitical agenda abroad.
“Ukraine On Fire” is a ‘must watch’ to help get an understanding of the situation in Ukraine.

GB, Thanks for contributing the additions to this post! Absolutely necessary to gain a full spectrum overview of the current situation.
It’s all fascinating, the history and everything leading up to the current situation. In part 4 of the Putin Interviews, you might find the segment from 27:52 to 35:50 particularly interesting. Perhaps what is now transpiring is what Biden and Obama threatened in 2016.
Because I’ve always liked to read and also to travel the world, for firsthand experience, I have a very different view of what’s going on than do most people. Twice, in 1989 and again in 1990, I made special extended visits to the USSR. After taking a risk and entering the USSR under questionable circumstances, instead of getting thrown in prison or shot, I was invited by the government to stay as long as I like and to do virtually anything I wanted while there. This was because of Perestroika and Glasnost, along with my good fortune and feeling my way along. It was an incredible opportunity.
Since that era, I’ve been to many of the former Soviet satellite countries and, with the exception of Armenia, I’ve been to all the former Soviet Republics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan). In 2019, I spent a few months wandering around Central Asia. The backbone of the trip was traveling the trans-Siberian railroad in segments, from Vladivostok to Moscow, with many side trips. From Moscow, I went north to Murmansk by train, then overland into Norway and beyond. Russia is massive and diverse.
Maybe the single thing I’m most impressed with in the country is the Russians’ self-sufficiency and ability to continue forward, in spite of the tragic history, with no sense of entitlement.
