   I said that on Twitter and got locked out of my account unless I recanted and first handed over my phone number.

       Randy Hillier opened a Telegraph account on account of Twitter suspending him for 12 or 24hrs and he invited everyone to follow him there. So I went but you have to use the Telegraph desktop program to access Telegraph content even from a computer. Twitter allows for browser access from a computer so it allows for “unverified” accounts without a cellphone number. Later, if they want to “verify” you out the door they ask you to provide a cellphone number to disqualify you from anonymous access. Telegraph insists on it up front by asking for a phone number as a username. Naturally it has to be a “username” no has used before. It’s a pretty sly trick and there are probably a lot of people who don’t like independent-thinking people who will support these phone number policies as forcing people to be responsible and other virtuous things. Even the police allow for anonymous tips because that’s the only way to protect witnesses from attack. But of course, Twitter doesn’t want anyone feeling safe from them.

       I tried to sign up for Instagram with just a normal username and no phone number and it kept failing, several times, although it says you can use either a phone number or just a username. I used my cellphone number for the username and it worked instantly. I could see the cellphone and it’s “unique, personal identification number” becoming a license plate for people.
