Time For A Little Common Sense
While I don’t expect the jerks running the country to do this, because they don’t have the ability to use even a modicum of common sense, here is a suggestion that could save money, eliminate a nuisance for everyone, and help mitigate(maybe only modestly) the shortages in copper, nickel and zinc.
For years, pennies and nickels have been more of a nuisance than offering any value or use.(I doubt little kids still even bother with them) If the government stopped making and issuing them, they would save money. If they recalled all the outstanding ones by just having banks take them in from anyone who wants to turn them in voluntarily, they would gain huge stockpiles of zinc, nickel and copper, from all the old ones before they stopped using it.
Politicians never want to do this because it admits the system has failed and inflation is higher than acknowledged. That ship sailed long ago for both pennies and nickels. Could Biden and Yellen make one move that benefits both the administration and the public? I won’t hold my breath waiting.
Yes, it’s come to that. Canada stopped with penny a decade ago. For once we are ahead of the Americans. In this case, not something to be proud of.
In Canada the dollar coin is called the loonie, while the two dollar coin is called a toonie. (Really)
It’s like this: the dime is now the new penny. If follows that the loonie is the new dime, the “sawbuck” the new loonie, and a “C note” has become the new sawbuck.
Actually it’s worse than that. I remember the days when a cup of coffee cost a dime. These days try getting a decent cup of coffee for loonie – or even a toonie. Ha, ha, ha! Oh my, wiping tears of laughter from my eyes!
Laughter will turn to sorrow before this is over.
You have the right attitude. Laugh it off, especially if you are stacking physical.
