America and especially democrats have given “democracy” a bad name. We know what they really mean when they throw that term around. And it hasn’t helped in those places where foreign policy has attempted to export “democracy” (control by CIA and State).
That said, if I’d been living in San Salvador all these years, that’s a tradeoff I would likely make as well. Who can blame them? But how do you avoid the slippery slope? You need SOME kind of mechanism to protect POLITICAL competition when its conveniently miscast as criminal, and someone decides to throw away the key.
