John Diefenbaker, a Canadian Prime Minister in a better time, said ” Polls are for dogs!” He had it right. Some other wag, who I don’t know – possibly everyone – said, “You get what you pay for.” Put those two sayings together, and you’ll find the truth. The guy that pays for the poll gets the answer he wants, and he may as well let his dog piss all over it for all it’s worth.
John Diefenbaker, whether he be in heaven or hell – let’s face it, he was a politician, we all know where he is – would be pleased to know that some sonofabitch can still remember him, and spell his name correctly!
For the Statesiders, he was a contemporary of Ike, who probably got along with him, and Kennedy, who probably didn’t.
For FGC and other poll geeks, if you want to get a much better read, use the betting markets. As long as it isn’t one where they limit the amount of the bet to something inconsequential like $10 dollars. If the bet maximums are fairly large, people wagering their money(much like financial markets) will give you a more objective result not influenced by who paid for the poll. The track record of betting markets regarding elections, while not perfect, are a much better indicator of actual outcomes.
