Vaccine Safety: 57% Want Congress to Investigate CDC

Many voters have concerns about risks from the COVID-19 vaccine and a majority want a congressional investigation of how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has handled the issue.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Congress should investigate how the CDC dealt with issues of COVID-19 vaccine safety. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Last week, the CDC announced it was investigating a possible risk of stroke in senior citizens from Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. The agency had previously reported possible vaccine-related risk of heart inflammation among young men.
Forty-nine percent (49%) of voters believe it is likely that the CDC has provided the public with complete information about the danger of side effects from COVID-19 vaccines, including 29% who say it’s Very Likely. However, 41% don’t think it’s likely the CDC has provided complete information about vaccine risks, including 22% who say it’s Not At All Likely. Another 10% are not sure.
The survey of 900 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on January 15-17, 2023 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Democrats trust the CDC more than either Republicans or independent voters do. Sixty-six percent (66%) of Democrats believe it’s at least somewhat likely the CDC has provided the public with complete information about the danger of side effects from COVID-19 vaccines, compared to 35% of Republicans and 45% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Thirty-four percent (34%) of Republicans, 25% of unaffiliated voters and 10% of Democrats think it’s Not At All Likely the CDC has provided complete information about COVID-19 vaccine risks.
Seventy percent (70%) of Republicans, 48% of Democrats and 54% of unaffiliated voters say Congress should investigate how the CDC dealt with issues of COVID-19 vaccine safety. Forty percent (40%) of Democrats, 20% of Republicans and 31% of unaffiliated voters oppose a congressional investigation of the CDC.
Majorities of every racial category – 56% of whites, 51% of black voters and 66% of other minorities – believe Congress should investigate the CDC’s handling of vaccine safety.
Voters under 40 are more likely than their elders to believe the CDC has provided the public with complete information about the danger of side effects from COVID-19 vaccines. However, younger voters are also significantly more supportive of a congressional investigation.
More men (63%) than women voters (52%) favor a congressional investigation of how CDC handled COVID-19 vaccine safety.
Breaking down the electorate by income brackets, trust that CDC fully informed the public about vaccine side-effect risks is highest among voters earning more than $200,000 a year, and lowest among those with annual incomes between $30,000 and $40,000.
Government employees are more likely than private sector workers or retirees to believe that the CDC gave the public complete information about COVID-19 vaccine risks.
President Joe Biden’s strongest supporters have the highest level of trust in the CDC. Among voters who Strongly Approve of Biden’s job performance as president, 69% say it is Very Likely that the CDC has provided the public with complete information about the danger of side effects from COVID-19 vaccines. By contrast, only eight percent (8%) of those who Strongly Disapprove of Biden’s performance think the CDC has fully informed the public about vaccine risks.
Nearly half of Americans think COVID-19 vaccines may be to blame for many unexplained deaths, and more than a quarter say someone they know could be among the victims.
A majority of Americans think COVID-19 vaccines are effective, but have concerns about side effects.
