Chinese ev car maker outsmarts Tesla. No need for a charging plug in your home, highrises do not need infrastructure for plugs…… buy the car without the battery ! They rent the battery to you for $12/month and you then drive up to a Nio outlet where they swap the battery out for a fully charged one in 4 minutes and off you go again !
Ha, ha… excatly! I was wondering why they don’t do that with all electric cars.
Run out of electrons somewhere on the highway? No problem. Call the automobile association and they arrive with fresh batteries and you are on your way. Easy.
Of course, that doesn’t get around other problems with electric cars: used battery recycling, inadequate power line infrastructure, and hydrocarbon fueled power plants. The development process required to convert to an all electric transportation system is still in its infancy.
Carry a spare too
I like the business plan of Nio better than Tesla and the price, at least for now, is very reasonable. However, I can’t see them keeping the subscription price this low for long. A Tesla charging station is cheap to build but one of these Nio automated processing stations looks expensive. Building and maintaining these (especially when you consider keeping vandals away from their automated systems) is going to be expensive and the price will probably have to go up significantly.
