Barkerville, BC
The 1860’s Cariboo Gold Rush produced the most prolific gold extraction in Canada.
I believe 4000 tons of gold was mined in Barkerville alone.Just spent a few days camping there and touring the historic town.
In the beginning, the miners could pick up 1 oz nuggets.
At it’s peak, Barkerville was the largest settlement North of San Francisco and West of Chicago. 10,000. It attracted all the modern conveniences of the day
It is now a preserved mining town. No one lives there. Wells is 3 kms away. That is the closest village.
Had 4 Covid free days. Amazing how it rejuvenates the soul.
Didn’t find any nuggets, eh?
About 6-7 years ago, Barkerville Gold discovered many millions of ounces and then thoroughly scammed shareholders. I was one of many that lost a “real” fortune due to corruption — a person never really recovers from that type of a loss although am working on it.
The Barkerville Gold property was eventually acquired by Osisko Royalies (I think) — and then they spun it out into separate company and I’ve lost track of it. I understand that they are now starting to mine the discovery as of late 2021.
lt highlights the importance of honesty, integrity and morality as being AS IMPORTANT as the drill core itself when investing in a jumior mining company.
So there is lots of gold left in Barkerville! The preserved town is a delight and well worth the trip — we stayed at the Billy Barker Casino Hotel (how could you not with a name like that)!
