The experience of a Canadian Grocery shopper
Before the tariff spat took place GMG would shop for local produce first then go to US and other sources if Canada did not grow that item at that time. She remembers the quality or lack thereof over the past few years of US produce.
She just arrived home from her weekly shopping. US Produce was rotting in the refrigerator display cases. No one buying them.
GMG was going to offer to pay a deeply discounted price to take them off their hands when she found that the grocery store had sourced produce from Europe and S America of better quality than the US sourced goods from before the tariffs. Non-sprayed at the same price as before the spat. She was happy to buy.
Trump may have shot himself in the foot as Florida Citrus needs to find a mkt for that % that went to Canada. The store produce buyers may continue to buy off shore produce as the quality was better than the US for the time of year at the same price as before.
US Border cities are now suffering. Bellingham, WA retail was massively over built to accommodate the Canadian Cross-border shopper. The last time GMG was there a few weeks ago, there were no BC license plates at Trader Joes except hers. Normally 20% were Canadian and people spent a lot of money on each trip, as GMG did. Groceries come back duty free before. Not anymore.
I’ll be shopping here next fall and winter (east side of PHX; locally grown)

Canadian Grocery Store produce prices are 2X to 6X more expensive than the AZ prices shown in your link.
Examples — celery stalks — your link 2 / $1 — yesterday grocery store $3.00 each
Strawberries 2 / $3 — yesterday grocery store (on sale) $3.44 each
Grapes $.39/lb — seedless grapes (on sale) $2.99/lb –> might not be equivalent if US marked is seeded (doesn’t say)
Tomatoes on Vine $.89/lb — grocery store $3.79/lb
Red Peppers 3 / $1 —- grocery store $3.17 each
Yukon Gold 3lbs/$1 — grocery store $1.40/lb
Retail prices around PHX will be a bit higher at other stores.
This place specializes in (local) produce and manages to keep them down because of high volume (turnover).
Retail prices in the Eastern US will be double those seen at SSRM.
The prices you are quoting can be found at Organic Groceries in the US that command a large premium.
Been watching SSRM to see if they get produce from Sonora, potentially subject to tariffing. So far, no obvious changes.
