Food products sold in California will no longer have a “sell by” stamp after July 1, 2026, after Gov. Gavin Newsom approved the nation’s first law governing food labeling.

How stupid. While I don’t know how valuable those dates really are for safety purposes as to how long one can eat something past the date, the purpose is really meant to prevent retailers from selling food after a reasonable time period. Yes, maybe a lot gets tossed and that is a shame. Most retailers should have relationships with food banks and shelters etc. that they could donate food near or soon after those dates. There are plenty of hungary people who could benefit and probably unlikely to be hurt by most foods a few days past their “sell by date.”
