Photographed driving into Smithers, BC
Smithers, 7000 pop, is located in the beautiful wide Bulkley Valley surrounded by mountains. It is an agricultural community and regional hub for 20,000. Two fast flowing clear rivers converge there. Great farmer’s mkt with vendors who think like us. Friendly people. Great fishing, hunting and Winter sports.
I had no idea what to expect as it is at 54 latitude and a 15-17 hour drive north of Vancouver. Long days in the Summer. Airport and passenger train service to the outside world as well.
Well this is what greeted us on Hwy 16.
Wow That’s incredible
The farther from “Civilization” the more aware people are
The big organic farmer who sold us a whack of veggies and eggs moved there from Vancouver Island, told us he bought a farm on the river in the valley to get away from the people there. “Everyone was shooting themselves up on the island”. One can truly hide here undisturbed by The Turd. Lots of young families and lots of churches from what I could see. Small businesses were thriving there. Didn’t have the typical abandoned look of the farm communities I would pass through in the Mid-West US.
Excellent recommendation!!
We lived for 20 years ranching between Smithers/Bulkley Valley and New Hazelton along 1.5 miles of Bulkley River frontage. Grazed cattle on 30,000 acres in summmer and logged a thousand acre woodlot in winter. IMO better climate and people than the Okangan area where we now reside…but all BC life is beautiful. www
