According to data from the European Union’s satellite monitoring service, more than 1.7bn tons of planet-heating gases (1.7 billion metric tons CO2 equivalent) have been released this year by the enormous fires – about three times the total emissions that Canada, a major fossil fuel-producing nation, itself produces each year.

Previously, I estimated 2.2 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent released by Canadian forest fires, or four times the total CO2 emissions that Canada produces yearly by industrial process and fossil fuels.
