The New York State Journal of Medicine published a retrospective of tobacco’s relationship to medicine in its December 1983 issue. Flipping through the pages is enlightening. Surrounding the articles describing the greed and politics of Big Tobacco are advertisements from medicine’s new love—Big Pharma. Doctors have exchanged one bedfellow for another.
By endorsing irrelevant COVID-19 vaccines and poorly tested bivalent boosters, the AMA is pushing a product without concern for its potential negative health effects. Like before, the medical profession lags behind public opinion. According to recent Rasmussen Reports, 7 percent of vaccinated individuals report a major side effect, and nearly half of Americans believe that COVID-19 vaccines have caused unexplained deaths, about the same proportion who believed that smoking caused cancer in the 1960s while the AMA was studying the issue.
A conflicted profession cannot honestly evaluate data. Nowadays, the pharmaceutical business is a tremendous business. An organization benefitting from product sales cannot be trusted to evaluate that product.
If doctors could not recognize the health dangers of tobacco for most of the last century, why should we trust them when they say novel vaccines are safe and effective?
That’s the headwind we are facing. Many Docs in the 50’s through the 70’s paid the ultimate price and succumbed to smoking related cancers and emphysema.
When MDs graduate, they rely on the Pharma Reps to educate them on the latest miracle drug. It’s like a Continuing Education credit (CE). Blind trust. The free samples and perks makes it a little easier to swallow. I believe there may be a regulation now that Docs can’t take free dinners and trips where the Reps preach the benefits of the drug at some resort, all expenses paid.
I tried to explain how the experimental shots were not what was promised to our local Doc. He and the Health Clinic director did not not care to know anything other than “Safe and Effective”. Brainwashing on display. They even sent out a couple of letters to their patients ridiculing the “anti-vaxxers”. I retained them and hope some day to sit down and discuss the misinformation they were spreading. Their main points have now been proven to be false.
Dental sales Reps would do the same for us. Free samples of the latest and greatest Dental material. The hype was over the top. Greatest thing since sliced bread. Then a year later they are peddling a new product that was to take the place of the one that just failed. Once I learned the game, I took the free samples but did not buy the product until it was proven to be superior to the old tried and true. So where did I use the “Latest and Greatest” free product? Patients on Social Services as they didn’t pay for them and you just had to tell them it was the latest product and would
monitor how it survived in their mouth. Glad those days are behind me.
