WHO renames monkeypox as mpox
The World Health Organization announced on Monday that it is renaming monkeypox as mpox due to concerns that the original name could be perceived as racist or stigmatizing.
- The WHO declared monkeypox a global emergency in July, after the disease was detected in more than 70 countries.
- Last month WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said monkeypox had seen “a promising decline globally. The number of reported cases has dropped for eight straight weeks. This is very encouraging.”
