   There has been quite a bit of dirt for quite a long time.

   I have seen comments by a hard-left former history teacher on a hard-left site wondering when right-wingers, conservatives, libertarians are going to start seeing the Constitution as a racket from the start. His contention, which he states is is well documented, esp in Madison’s diaries (if I recall correctly), is that its creation amounted to a coup against the Articles of Confederation which despite many weaknesses (such as, as with the Constitution) was far superior. The contention is that a cabal of huge landowners and bankers sneaked through an overly centralized system out of control of even the somewhat less wealthy, largely contrary to the rules of the convention with all sorts of cover-up. I have not researched the details and do not know.

   I do know that there have been dirty conventions and elections with lots of exclusions and opacity for a long time. A tradition. Possibly not just an American tradition.
