Prime Minister’s Questions usually begins with an update on the number of NHS and care workers whose deaths have involved Covid-19. On 20 May, Boris Johnson said the current figure stood at 181 NHS workers and 131 care workers, meaning the death toll has now passed 300.
That’s a stark reminder why it was essential to stop the community transmission rate (r number) staying above 1 as the case numbers soared. It kills 100 times as many health and care workers (despite all the prevention measures) than flu.
Scaled-up for the US that would be 1800 health care workers dead. Imagine the outcry if 1800 of your sports stars died in 12 weeks. Just because they are Doctors, Nurses, Surgeons, Porters, Care Staff doesn’t make them expendible.
Just my take.
Most people here think this virus is a clinton/gates/soros cabal induced hoax. Good luck in trying the get the AQNON folks to actually stop and look at verified data if it goes against their narrative.
Deaths up — cabal in charge; deaths down — the cabal is on the run. Sort of like the explanation of gold prices: gold down, cabal in charge; gold up, cabal on the run.
I don’t know what happened in UK…certainly health care workers are more likely to contract the virus.
300 deaths is so sad . I understand most were in high risk categories ( age and co morbidities and skin color)
I have not heard of any health care workers who died here.
I think there were a few…I believe with co morbidities.
BUT the overall death rate from confirmed cases in all people under 60 is .01% …and that doesn’t include cases that were not confirmed thought to be 10X higher)
I have been showing verified data for months here now which shows the virus is a hoax and not near as deadly as first advertised nor as presently advertised.
Deaths ARE down dramatically…but no mention of this data in your comments.
Is this all about preventing Flu Like Symptoms or is this all about the deaths ?
50,000 new diagnosed cases a day are producing less than 500 deaths a day in the USA.
Thats ~ 1%…and we know they only diagnose about 1 in 10 cases…as most are not tested.

I have posted charts with the death rate going down and discussed it many times before (feel free to look it up). Until the #’s change, the #’s are all we have.
US: 2,952,160 confirmed cases; 132,378 deaths = ~4.5%. The current 7 day avg (as of today) is 516 deaths / 48,544 cases = ~1%, which is a big improvement. The only caveat: if the ICUs start maxing out the death rate might go up. That is what happened in Italy, Spain and NY/NJ. Of course, you have to hope that treatment has also improved and that protection of nursing homes is better.

That may be the case in the US, but Covid-19 gave us more than 50,000 excess deaths in 3 months. Our scientists hoped for 20,000 – that’s what the modelling suggested was possible, but alas its more than double that. The same models suggested 500,000 fatalities if the virus was left to run its course. I’ve done the maths, and I think maybe 200,000 would’ve been closer to the mark. Scaled up that is equivalent to 1.2 million US deaths. The risk was too high to just wait and see if the modelling was right. It turns out it was wrong in terms of us being able to keep it to 20,000 dead. Very sad. Thousands are now living with Covid after effects, and presenting with a wide range of debilitating symptoms at hospitals across the country. This includes my young, fit healthy cousin by the way. This is nothing like flu, and shouldn’t even be put in the same sentence. I’ve seen what it does, close up and personally. It’s not pretty.
I AGREE It is nothing like the the “normal” flu.
I had it and so did dozens of people in this area that I work with and relatives and acquaintnces.
It’s like a the worst Flu ever for some (took 4 months for me to be symptom free) …but still 99% of all cases still active are considered “Mild”…see worldometer.
and that does not include those who were never diagnosed because they had negligable symptoms.
Fully, a prologue, and then questions for you.
Science, at least medical science and much of biology, is often rather more politicized than many people realize, and for this and other reasons often less settled than may be appreciated. The Covid-19 matter, where evidence is still transpiring and in my opinion rather unclear, is especially politicized, and liable for distortions of various sorts. Or at least that is what I think. My own opinions (which I will tend to withhold) are definitely…tentative. It is ok to change one’s mind to keep up with emerging facts and insights.
But hoax? Weren’t you saying that you yourself had it, that you were convinced that you had an unusual bug last autumn? A number of people say they had 1 or even 2 especially severe viral-type illnesses last winter season, often with highly unusual characteristics. Are you now thinking you did not have anything but a typical winter viral illness?

And now a skeptical challenge for you or any number of people here. It often seems to people who take a mainstream position that people in your position sometimes maintain a contradictory position. On the one hand you tend to maintain that the thing is a hoax, or at most something badly overblown. On the other hand, the hoax is said to be wreaking deadly health havoc because it is not being treated properly (for example, with hydroxychloroquine and zinc), and may even be an agent of biologic warfare. Quite the hoax!
I believe I know what many people mean. It is hard to state things clearly in a few lines. However it might be good to try to state a position in a little essay to reconcile this apparent contradiction.
When giving few lines here and there sticking strictly to facts and employing “maybe”‘s etc may help unless one has spent weeks doing nothing but examining the relevant scientific literature. Not that I always go by these rules.
The Hoax is the perpetuation of the belief that this thing would destroy humanity if left unchecked.
Turns out it kills the old and infirm and the hoax is that they now are destroying humanity ( the economy ) by overplaying the danger.
It has killed over 500,000 this year …the number is rising at less than 1% now.
Even if there is a second wave that kills the same…that will be 1 million.
1 million out of 8 Billion…do the math..thats infintisimal.

Sweden is now mostly done with this virus. They did not lock down and they have a lower death rate than UK and Belguim and Spain and Italy…and others all of who locked down hard.

Sweden does not have the ethnic diversity and huge numbers of international travellers concentrated in a global mega-city (London). You are comparing apples with pears.
Nor do most nations….so why did all Nations need to lock down ?
Toronto has a very large ethnic diverse population and a very large number of international travellers ( Lots of Chinese and Italians for example) and it didn’t fare too badly.
All nations didn’t need to, but it’s only hindsight that allows us to know that Italy, Spain, UK etc would be the countries worst hit. Pandemics never hit all countries to the same degree – why would they ?
