   New modeling and data from a community testing program are providing a clearer picture of the prevalence of novel coronavirus infections in King County, as well as additional evidence that transmission rates continue to decline thanks to social distancing.

   Researchers say the number of confirmed cases in the county — about 6,300 as of Friday — represents the tip of a much larger iceberg. In reality, about 46,000 people have likely been infected since the local epidemic began, according to information released Friday by Public Health – Seattle & King County. That translates into about 2% of county residents.

   But the estimate, in a new report from the Bellevue-based Institute for Disease Modeling, comes with an uncertainty range between 15,000 and 108,000.

   Another model, from researchers at MIT, estimates more than 105,000 people statewide have been infected, compared with about 14,600 confirmed cases.

   The discrepancy between confirmed and total infections isn’t a surprise. Testing has been limited, and data from other areas suggests the actual number of infections could be 10 to 20 times higher than the number of diagnosed infections. But this is the first time scientists have tried to put a ballpark number on total possible infections locally.

   The modelers used death data and information about the virus’ lethality to simulate the hidden transmission of disease. They also incorporated information from SCAN, a surveillance program that allows volunteers to swab their noses at home and send the sample to a central lab for analysis.

   It is called a novel coronavirus for a reason — we have no built in immunity to it. All the bacteria / flu germs that Bill talks about have been in our environment for hundreds/thousands of years. We have built in immune defenses. SARS?CoV?2 is brand new, plus it is highly contagious. I am not that excited about taking it out for a spin if the death rate is really 1% (or 2%, who knows?). That is like saying, “Hey there is an outbreak of Ebola in the next town, let’s go over there and see what is happening”.

   I am afraid Bill is engaged in quackery here.

     We actually not only have immunity built in, we have a natural vaccine built in.
     While virus’s continue to mutate, our bodies continue to adapt.
     Not only is Bill spot on, he is talking about the intelligence of the human body.
     Yes, not everyone will adapt and survive, but nature doesn’t give a sh*t about the individual,
     nature only does what is best for the whole system. We effect it and it effects us back.
     But it’s an ongoing cyclical system of change and adaptation, constant motion.

     One of the things I thought was so beautiful about one of Rambus’s latest write ups was how the markets work. You don’t tell it what to do, it tells you. Just like all of life.

     One of our greatest strengths is the ability to recognize when to surrender.
     Vulnerably is strength………

     While we have no immunity to a novel virus, we can develop immunity by producing antibodies once we are exposed to it.

     Probably 20% have already been exposed or sickened; we need to triple that for herd immunity by the fall. Masks and reasonable distancing could allow that to happen in a gradual enough way to not overwhelm health resources.

     I like masks because they reduce viral load, which seems to reduce severity of symptoms. Older people should obviously be most careful. I think Common Sense can get us through this next phase, without repeated lockdowns.

       Yes, sorry Alfa, what I’m implying is our bodies will respond, they are built to.
       So when I say we have the antibodies and vaccine, it’s because we are built to have it ready.

       My wife and I are pretty sure we had this back in November. Both of us hadn’t had anything like it before. I was obliterated for several days with what seemed like a cross between a flu and a cold.
       I have a physical job and work out a lot, so maybe that contributed to it not being worse?
       But with obesity, smoking and diet being all epidemics in this country, no wonder we lead the world in deaths!

         Had it in November and it kept coming back in our cases…finally feeling fine for a month now
