I was thinking that this Micro Miner Move , where they are Blasting off on good drill results is reminiscent of that era. That’s where I started “investing” in miners . I have been waiting ever since to see Gold Fever return…maybe this is it
Dozens of 100 baggers in a short 2year window 94 to 96…I participated and rode some all the way UP and all the way back down
Well too bad they made McConaughey look like a total sleaze bag. I am sure the real guy appeared more respectable and believable. Also, yes this really did happen, but I find it interesting that the theme presented by Hollywood in the early stages of a bull market is that gold is a scam. I would guess the movie that is produced towards the end in phase III is one where we all really do get rich.
4I don’t know anything about the movie and I don’t intend to see it, but I will note my impressions of the Bre-X matter, which I followed from a casual distance at the time:
1. From Globe and Mail articles (I used to subscribe from S of the Border) I had the impression that management only intended the usual garden variety type of scam but didn’t know what to do other than go along with it and amplify it as it caught on big.
2. I remember at a gold conference when the stock was around $10/share conversing with my then broker that it seemed scammish or at least way overhyped (as in by the gurus with too much stock or options), so we should probably stay out, but maybe… We always stayed firmly out. We had this conversation repeatedly as it increased by 10X or more. Afterwards we noted that if we had bought–even at multiples above where it was at this conference–but taken partial profits at stages on its rise we would have made a killing. Nevertheless I feel cleaner this way, having not covered myself with the scam slime. If there’s something like karma this particular matter is not hurting me.
3. At that conference I remember the majority of the newsletter writers and gurus, including supposedly respectable ones, gushing over Bre-X. You just had to buy it now (NOW!!! DON’T WAIT EVEN A TINY BIT!) or you’d be lost forever. I think some genuinely smart and honest newsletter writers were taken in–or at least one began sounding genuinely ashamed much later as the unraveling barely started to commence. The others–I don’t know.
4. There was always the question of how much the other companies, including one major, knew about it, w/o divulging a conviction that it was fraudulent to the public or the authorities.
5. There was at least one other blatantly fraudulent concurrent stock fraud of a similar nature (related to an allegedly special way of processing ore–always a yellow-to-red-flag) that was not big enough to get much attention. I think there were two or more concurrent frauds maybe
5. It helped wreck the PM exploration/development stock market for some time. It provoked some regs that are undoubtedly onerous. However some of the regs are helpful to the public, such that such blatant fraud would be harder and possibly impossible to pull off now (I hope). There is clearly not enough honesty still–you can see unappetizing analyses and what looks awfully much like stock price manipulations pretty often, I’m afraid. Just not the gargantuan fraud.
That’s Great Neil. Thanks

I’d like to try again but this time sell a top 🙂

Should have kept the Bre-X share certificates, they might have been worth something as mementos
