What I would love to see (the Dems and Kamala would never agree) is a debate with no moderators and no audience and no one controlling the microphones. The mics should be on timers where only one is on at a time so no one could interrupt the other. Each candidate could make an opening and closing statement and in between they would alternate for say 5 minute intervals where they could respond to each others previous remarks and or bring up a new topic.
I would watch that!
Put them both on chess timers, each for half the allotted duration.
Guarantees equal time, forces you to save time for the closing, and keeps you from monologueing.
