my mom and (step)dad were both big on religion.
He descended from the earliest Puritan pioneers, and my mom was Dutch Reformed (Calvinist). She was borderline extremist.
So I left religion when I left home for college. (and went for Secular Humanism instead).
Nothing I’ve seen since then in the church tells me they have all that much to offer society at large. Other than local community, and I’ll give them that. If you need reminding on how to go about your life, I can see the value.
But they don’t offer solutions to the bigger social problems, and often shy away from those even. That was SO striking to me during the 60s. How lame they were.
Moreover, religion divides.
Is there a need for a common human philosophy that all can embrace? Absolutely. Find the commonalities and construct a philosophical mosaic.
