Colorado has become the first state to enact emergency powers due to the outbreak, and has ordered farmers to slaughter millions of chickens to stop transmission of the disease.  Democrat Gov. Jared Polis announced the disaster emergency declaration last week which “unlocks the resources necessary to help affected poultry facilities respond to and contain outbreaks of avian flu.”

NRGene Canada, an agricultural technology firm, announced the opening of its North American Insect Centre on July 30th. The company says its goal is to create livestock feed using insect protein from black soldier flies.

In a June 18 press release the company stated: NRGene Canada, NRGene’s Canadian subsidiary, proudly announces the opening of the North American Insect Center (NAIC)”

The statement continued: “This research center for collaborative innovation was established together with the Swiss technology group Bühler marking a significant milestone in the advancement of insect protein production in North America”
