         I kept bees in Gaza. Many years ago now but thats where I got trained. Not even kidding. That was the late Seventies and times were different. Back then the PLO was injecting poison into Israeli Jaffa Oranges bound for markets in Europe and in effect trying to destroy the agricultural sector of Israel. We felt it because our bees were being used all over the country to pollinate Orange groves. suddenly demand for pollinators dropped off. We had to move hives out of Gaza when landmines were being planted under the lids of colonies. I used to open hives with a 4 meter long stick to be far enough back that I would survive if the hive exploded! Not much has changed has it?

           Sure I thought I told you all that. I have been in North and East Africa for years and lived in Israel for awhile. I lived in Egypt even longer. On the Red Sea, Sinai. Then spent a decade in Ethiopia where I got married and got fairly fluent with Amharic. But because its a semetic language it wrecked my memory of Hebrew. I could never seem to keep the two separated so I specialzed in Amharic in the end! lol

           No book forthcoming. This is it. Just a normal life.

         Cool, yes bees are amazing.

         You know I always have this picture of bees in my mind when I hear someone say “We are many and they are few”. What I see is a bunch of bees sitting on the edge of a hive entrance shouting at the Beekeeper above who may as well be a God to them. Yes, they are many…..but they are still just bees!

           Well, yes and no. Here’s a story you’ll appreciate.

           One hot day in Bend, before going hang gliding I decided to do a quick rotation of supers on one hive. As you know, normally this is a simple matter. But on this day, the hive I was working was the one with the mean bees!

           Although in retrospect I should have known better, because I was working with the mean bees, I didn’t think anything of it for some reason. I guess I thought because it was hot they would be mellow. How wrong I was.

           Anyway, because it was hot, all I was wearing before going out was a pair of shorts, no shirt, no socks, no shoes. I put on my beekeeper outfit: one-piece suit, brimmed hat with netting, irrigation boots because I had just flood-irrigated the pasture next to the bees (this comes into play, explained later), rubber bands securing the pants around the boots, heavy gloves and off I went. As soon as the lid was off, heaps of bees leapt onto the net just inches from my face, buzzing like crazy. They were pissed off. They also covered the rest of me, stinging me especially across the shoulders and upper back, wherever the suit was against my skin. Because I hadn’t put on a shirt, their stingers were able to get to my skin, but not deep enough to get me with a full sting, thank goodness. Still, it was nerve-wracking. All the time, those suckers were trying to get under the edges of the netting and I knew it was only a matter of time before they succeeded. It was the only time I recall ever really freaking out.

           I took off running. Only got a few steps and one of the boots got sucked right off my foot in the mucky ground. With half the hive following me and many still on me, I had to sit down in a few inches of standing water right there in the pasture, to keep that foot under water. The bees kept stinging me, but I sat there and waited them out, knowing the gazillions of small stings was preferable to them getting directly onto my foot and then up into the suit. Eventually, after they had their fill of terrorizing me, they left me to go back to the hive.

           When winter came, one wicked cold day when it was well below zero, I went out and had my revenge by taking the lid off that hive. That was the end of the mean bees!

           Of course, my episode with the ‘killer bees’ pales in comparison with the idea of dealing with mined beehives. Quadruple sheesh!

           A harrowing tale Goldballoon. I hear you brother. We have all opened that lunatic hive once or twice. I had my share too. But I never murdered them afterwards! What the hell? They are still just moody bugs. LOLOLOL
