   Seems to boil down to the Religious Right and their concerns about moral degradation,

   versus the rest who see Rationality and Honest Science being tossed out the window (toward Equality of Result not Equality of Opportunity)

   As for Progress? …. higher standards of living, universally enjoyed at some basic level at least, achieved through honest and personally rewarding effort not corruption (of all kinds), without being accomplished at the expense of our natural surroundings.

   As for technology, it giveth and it taketh away. Modern weapons can end civilization and that’s probably baked into the cake at this point. And technology also provides asymmetric information to those with direct access. That leads to corrupted results, for society at large. As long as the world has sociopaths and psychopaths, utopia is just a dream.
