KM pulls it off !!
Speaker Kevin McCarthy scored a shocking victory over the deep state Saturday by securing House passage of a 45-day stopgap bill to keep the government open and cut off funding for Ukraine.
McCarthy’s victory seemed almost impossible as recently as this morning amid disagreements inside his own conference and a willingness among Democrats to shut down the government over Ukraine funding.
Yet as it became clear that momentum for a stopgap continuing resolution, or CR, without Ukraine funding was building, panicked Democrats began utilizing delay tactics, including a long filibuster speech from Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
The bill now shifts to the Senate, where Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have locked arms for weeks insisting on using the funding battle as leverage for continuing taxpayer subsidization of Ukraine’s war.
The duo reportedly have acquiesced to the House bill in order to prevent a shutdown.
Great news…More of a Victory for Matt Gaetz than Kevin McCarthy
An important first step. Stopping any additional money for Ukraine war was priority number one. The border and other spending issues will have to wait for after this 45 day period runs out. Little by little if the GOP handles it right they can attack one or two things at a time to give the Dems the choice of accepting losing one small item or letting the govt. shut down.
There’s something fishy about this. They aren’t cutting off Ukraine yet. Maybe there’s enough in the pipeline for a while, or maybe there’s a reassessment of tactics going on, but they’re not walking away at this point.
“There’s something fishy about this. They aren’t cutting off Ukraine yet. ”
I believe they agreed to deal with Ukraine in a separate budget item.
But that’s Gaetz’ point. Break up these omnibus bills and give opponents opportunities to fight the pieces, not ALL OR NONE.
Thanks, pd. That makes sense, and kudos to Gaetz for cracking that omnibus nonsense.
