Wow, burning all books written before 2008! That is ancient history in 2007 I suppose. Just throw it out since who needs to know stuff prior to the Great Recession of that year. Unreal. You know, this is part of an old playbook that has probably been going on for centuries. Library burning is one of the great acts of how civilizations can be made to disappear.
The destruction of library of Alexandria is a good example. The loss of all texts written by the inhabitants of Carthage is another. Very little remains of the writings produced by the Aztec and Mayans and when it comes to Easter Island all that survives are a few pieces of wood that cannot be deciphered. There are innumerable examples where centers of knowledge and history were abruptly wiped away and lost to history. Mao himself purged millions of books during his tenure.
And we wonder aloud what ever happened to the Tartarians. One day people will question if Canadians were an actual society. Gone like Atlantis or made to disappear in the folds of history as everything gets rewritten to suit the whims of the victors of the day. This is shocking to me on some levels. Its actually happening in front of our eyes. And we are supposed to be comforted that our knowledge base is safe in electronic format in places like Bloomberg News or Wikipedia or the Wayback machine.

Libraries: I was a voracious reader in my early teens until I went off to college. The mysteries and sci-fi went back many years.
Mostly hardcover. To the 40″s. The classics. There was a hiatus of over 10 years that I only had time to read the odd fiction book. I never visited a public library during that time. Life got busy and I had other interests. Fast forward to the 90’s and I had the time for pleasure books. I went back to the same library that I had known so well. I looked for some of the same authors and their books. They were mostly gone. Forgotten.
The history and non-fiction books were still there. They were reference type books.
There appears to be a constant refreshing of books to the latest and best sellers. I don’t come across many fiction older than 20 years unless it is a reprint of the original due to popularity.
If what we see above is an arbitrary cutoff, those librarians should be ashamed of themselves.
