This message was in my inbox this afternoon. It’s from Tradingview who no longer want to offer Two-Factor Authentication as a security feature for their basic plan customers. Two-Factor Authentication is where they send you an SMS text to your phone when you are logging in which you then need to authorize your account access.  It’s a great feature since nobody can access your trading accounts unless they are in possession of your mobile phone.

So why are they doing this?

Well because they want you to start using Google to authenticate your access. The effect is to take away your personal control and hand it over to a third party. And just like that the farmyard got a little bit smaller and another gate was closed on the cattle pens. So what will you do the day Google refuses to authenticate on your behalf because of some wrong you commit online? Or for some thought crime like criticizing LGBTQ?

I hope everyone can see where this is all going. We are seeing a lot of these kinds of security changes anymore. A very popular feature that just about everyone is offering lately is the opportunity to store all your passwords with a Third Party provider. You know, so you never forget your complicated 16 character codes that are needed to access your mail and bank and pretty much everything. I would like to suggest you seriously consider the ramifications before taking on such services though as its tantamount to handing over your front door keys to some inscrutible, remote megacorporation.

And while I’m at it today, are you even aware that when you have Spellcheck enabled on your browser that it’s uploading every single word you type online into a cloud database that is there to ostensibly keep you on the right side of the English language? That’s right, someone elses computer server is being authorized to review all your words before you even hit “send” and check the content for spelling mistakes!

Do you seriously doubt that copies are being retained or analyzed by Artificial Intelligence Algos? Well don’t doubt it. If we have learned anything these past three years its that trusted authorities cannot be trusted at all. So before signing up to start using Grammarly or before allowing third parties to check your spelling via the cloud, think twice and then think three times.

YOU are being watched!
