Who was it heading toward Kamchatka next??

     Hmmm… just who is “him”??? Fortunately for me, I embrace the full spectrum of life, including weather. Cooling, warming, hot, cold, medium, whatever, I like it all and roll with it. Just as I don’t limit my likes to only vanilla ice cream!

     In that post you linked, you’ll see that I was not heading toward Kamchatka, but away from it. On that day, I flew to Sakhalin, but not before experiencing an earthquake. Was that a precursor to today’s eruption?

     At the moment, I’m in Vladivostok. During the past few days, I’ve done a bunch of bureaucratic gymnastics, in an attempt to get authorization to go to a place called Anadyr, then to Provideniya. They are at the very tip of Russia’s Far East. In 1990, I spent two months in Provideniya, then traveled to Anadyr, Magadan, Khabarovsk, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal, before returning to Provideniya and then back to Nome, Alaska and finally back to Bend, Oregon.

     Unfortunately, I discovered it is more difficult for a foreigner to get to Anadyr and Provideniya now than it was in 1990, in the Soviet era. Foreigners must now have a local resident apply for their authorization to visit; the application must be made 2-3 months in advance! What this effectively does is limit foreign visitors to those who sign up for exorbitantly-priced tours, well in advance. Spur-of-the-moment travels like me have no chance to get there legally, whether rich or poor. So, I couldn’t go to Anadyr or Provideniya. As a result, I’ll switch gears and go in the opposite direction today.

     Before I knew of the regulations for going to Anadyr, I made a reservation to fly there today, departing Vladivostok at 5:05 AM. Had I been on that flight, I would at this very moment have a bird’s eye view of the plume of ash from the volcano eruption in Kamchatka. If you check out the link below, you’ll see where the flight is as I type. It has obviously deviated its flight path to the west or up-wind side of the ash plume:

     Because of the sanctions, for me to get to get to Japan now would require swimming! This morning I bought a ticket to Moscow. The plane just landed, after an 8 hour flight. Not yet sure what comes next.
