“Observing there have been five deaths worldwide, the WHO’s chief officer declared monkeypox a “public health emergency of international concern” yesterday. In a statement, unpronouncibly-named WHO director Tedros Ghebreyesus said “WHO’s assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region where we assess the risk as high.”

It’s weird that a disease transmitted by gay men only poses a “high” risk in Europe. What’s Ghebreyesus saying, exactly?

Earlier, I said “the WHO’s chief officer declared the emergency” because he overruled the international health agency’s own expert committee, which voted 9-6 NOT to recommend emergency status. He overruled them because science. So shut up.

The last declaration of emergency from the WHO was the 2020 covid pandemic. So. Under that ridiculous treaty they tried to expand earlier this year, member nations — including the U.S. — are obligated to do a bunch of stuff whenever the WHO declares a state of emergency. I would expect a lot of no-bid contracts to issue and the federal cash printing machines to fire back up.

Several articles about the emergency declaration mention treatment options for pediatric patients. Pediatric. Is anyone looking into how these kids GOT the monkeypox? Seems like an important question, given what we know about the mode of transmission.

White House Covid response coordinator Ashish Jha told reporters on Friday that the Biden Administration is also considering a declaration of emergency related to monkeypox.

Um. When everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency.

And, why is the COVID coordinator worrying about monkeypox. Shouldn’t he be focused on covid?”
