they certainly like it here….. for the first time I saw a crow having a dust bath in the old oak stump- all dust.
Very cheerful.
He/she was having a helluva time.
Thanks Fully.
Have small flock of crows here in part of SW VA.
They are always in my yard, and not any of the others (all large) in the neighborhood.
Might be because the others keep theirs neat, mowed, probably pesticided too.
Not mine. I even leave a large segment unmowed for weeds, flowers, bees, etc.
But the crows prefer the freshly mowed. 15-20 as a group.
So many birds here, and SO NOISY at 5am, that I’ve opened other windows and closed the master bedroom windows to soften the cacophony so I can sleep in longer.
I think the mockingbirds are part of that. But I don’t know the others’ sounds to pin the remaining culprits down.
The lack of pesticide use probably means a more natural insect environment in your yard I’d bet and more things for the crows to eat. Mine is the same and there’s always birds hopping around eating things. I’ve got the 5am noise problem too but it’s not every day and it seems to be different flocks having breakfast and other noisy things. Try putting out a bird bath. I used an old plastic sled and filled it with fresh water. Then you’ll be real popular, even with all the other animals that roam around at night.
Crows are amazing birds.
When I was a child, a family on the next street over from us had a pet crow. It was free to fly out of its cage.
It frequently came to visit us and rest on top of the swing set frame while us kids were swinging and singing.
We would feed it some scraps of bread, and then it would fly back home to its cage.
At some point, we were told not to give any more bread scraps to the crow because they require a protein-based diet.
