You tell me.
Is liberty lost, or not? It’s as plain as the nose on your face if you are capable of logical thought.
“But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.” —John Adams (1775)
I’m really scared about what’s happening now.
I’m not so sure about Adams or what happened in the past though.
For example, Adams as president was a horrible offender on cracking down on liberty. Some was wrested back after he was out as president. The bill of rights might have helped, though it has been frequently ignored.
There have been various times when things were pretty bad in the liberty era in the US for whites with some money even after AdamsI. 1812 war if you didn’t go along with Madison clique. Polk. 1860 to 1865 or later (depending where you were, who you were). Wilson was the worst IMO. etc. But things improved. If you were a slave, a an extremely poor white, a native American, most of the time, forget about it, but in many cases there was improvement of sorts. So in the past there has been some improvement. Law and constitution may have helped but I think it has often been a matter of interrelations of power, organization, economy, and increasingly organization of propaganda etc.
As far as the Constitution goes–
Personally I have to wonder that the Constitution was a step backwards from the Articles of Confederation, as flawed as it was (before someone complains–both endorsed slavery one way or another). I think it would be mighty nice to have some decentralization right about now personally, but pigs don’t seem to fly.
No history expert here, but some on the left and the right have written that an examination of Madison’s diaries during the Constitutional Convention + other evidence show its creation to be a deliberate coup by tiny # of financiers and huge landowners against the rest of the country, enabling them to limit the power and freedom of nearly everyone else in a somewhat occult + sleazy way that has had just about everyone bamboozled ever since. I wouldn’t know.
That’s an easy answer… total loss with no chance to recover.
Once the people are bought, even for a pittance, they stay bought.
