I was not going to comment except lightly for a while, but I have broken my resolution. Here I go again. Some disparate thoughts you may or may not find of value:
I don’t know about any of you, but I find that my views of the world have changed extraordinarily in recent years, even in recent months or weeks.
Over at off-guardian.org the extreme leftwing commenters (typically libertarian-left bent) have been stating that they don’t know why it is that leftists are resistant to “conspiracy theories.” It is true that they are, and I don’t know either. I, more left than anything else, certainly was until extremely recently. I don’t understand, and they don’t understand.
Having skimmed the 4 parts I don’t have problems with much of it though I would need to read more. I need to review the climate change stuff — so much is making me question so much. To be sure, I never had a firm position other than that I did not know since I try not to take firm positions unless I truly know. I also think my own personal jury is still out on Trump.
I do think the piece is off on the Russian Revolution. Almost everyone is wrong on it. There was extremely popular unrest from around 1905 onward, if not much earlier with huge repression. Contrary to what you read almost anywhere, there was a multiplicity of radical groups, some with great support, of which the Bolsheviks were but a minority. Some were Marxist, a few Anarchist or anarchosyndicalist, many were home-grown and typically based in thoughts of basing life on bringing out the best in agrarian life without overlords. (I’m leaving out considerable liberal opposition.) From my own type of perspective the Bolsheviks ran something of a counter-revolution, with exquisite viciousness, and almost all historians have for one reason or another enjoyed distorting the fact for different reasons. Many of the Bolsheviks’ very earliest victims were people who considered themselves Marxists, anarchists, as well as other revolutionaries (“Left Social Revolutionary Party”, “Maximalist”, and contrary to right wing propaganda, a huge proportion were both jewish and non-jewish russian or other ethnic, both urban workers and peasantry.
Lenin, up there IMO as one of worst people of the last century, undoubtedly saw himself as a genuine revolutionary, but from way before the start, his brilliance notwithstanding, missed the point, figuring he needed to do anything he could top-down, totally in cold blood. Take over and perfect preexisting repressive apparatus? Great. Foreign bankers offer loans that might be useful? Rope that could be used to hang them. Other revolutionaries whether party leaders or common people being a nuisance by trying to run factories or rural areas democratically? Repress for efficiency’s sake. Lenin and Trotsky did their best to undermine early foreign Marxist critics by propaganda since they could not kill or imprison them the way they could those under their direct control. Many people acted astonished by revelations after the fall of the USSR or by this or that defector that mass slaughter started under Lenin not Stalin. However these slaughters were well-described — known to me for example — in obscure works, some nearly contemporaneous — from Marxists and anarchists, both jewish and not — contrary to all the propanda from right to left, or “coverup” if you prefer. There’s some propaganda I have somewhere of suppressed deathbed regrets by Lenin, but, garbage I think.
In any case, the czarist regime was not so nice, life there was not so happy, but there were cover-ups such as that major early victims of the Bolsheviks were revolutionaries of multiple ethnicities marxist, homegrown-ideological, and anarchist.
To clarify my comment on jury out on Trump: I am not a fan, but I just don’t know what to make of him. Too many filters, many hugely deceitful from enemies. Still quite a few hours of his term left. Big question, how much is an act? You occasionally run across the assertion that GWBush is in private highly intelligent w/o much of a Texas accent. If there is any Obama there at all other than brand name and actor it is unclear to me what’s there exactly. For various reasons I think with Trump there are bigger question marks. There could be Trump behind Trump behind Trump.
Thanks pedro…I am not sure most here are ready for this.
Everybody has been as quiet s a church mouse.
This guy speaks….I listen
