COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
(an older – june/july Gallup poll but still very much relevant – maybe this point has been expressed before but bears repeating)
“Women, Democrats, Northeasterners most likely to always use mask in public”
https://news.gallup.com/poll/315590/americans-face-mask-usage-varies-greatly-demographics.aspx
Shouldn’t people outside that demographic be dying or at least getting disproportionately sick if there is ANY truth to the effectiveness of mask wearing?
“The one exception is Republicans, among whom a majority say they wear masks infrequently — either sometimes (18%), rarely (9%) or never (27%).”
The dilema for leftist’s who deny mask wearing is political is their failure to mentally process –
“Why aren’t our political opponents suffering disproportionately if what our politicians, TV and smartphone news feeds are saying is true?”
I don’t go out much and didn’t even before a year ago. I don’t do great sampling. I am not a good source.
Nevertheless I have the impression that in my region there is considerable variability from locale to locale such that habits and attitudes as well as enforcement can differ markedly if one goes a few miles. Contrary to those who like to break things down according to ethnicity, I don’t think it goes that way so much where I am.
I have the impression that those who vote the DNC NPR way strongly tend to buy the COVID orthodoxy. Their local authorities will tend strongly to have fines and will tend to enforce.
Some leftists use the acronym PMC – professional managerial class – to describe the group that supported the “liberal” Harris-Biden ticket and the DNC in general. The term, while overly broad and sloppy, is useful: lawyers, doctors, realtors, teachers, administrators (maybe above all “human relations” types!), all sorts of other bureaucrats or near-bureaucrats. I think jurisdictions filled with PMCs were big on COVIDianism early on. After a few months, I think you could go to the next jurisdiction, one with genuine class and ethnic diversity, and find lots of masks worn incorrectly, deliberately, especially by the non-PMC types. Enforcement would be haphazard. Now I have the impression that even many PMC types are tiring of the Covidian fun and games, letting the masks slip a little.
The jurisdictions that have advertised being Green and Progressive, where whites put rainbows and BLM signs out and resolution after resolution is passed in favor of Diversity and Greenness — those are the ones where there is stricter and stricter enforcement and compliance. These are ones with governments and lots of volunteer Do-Gooders pushing to make the jurisdiction #1 in the state in GreenDiversity etc. Some of these have poor or nonwhites, who have to put up with the stuff. Others don’t.
In some jurisdictions having older PMC or retired PMC populations who watch lots of TV may strongly correlate. I haven’t figured out younger populations who are addicted to phones.
When I go out in a large state park or in an urban area (D voting) I have not seen any massively enthusiastic compliance by blacks or whites. I have seen evidence of disregard in urban setting by personnel who thought they were unobserved in a somewhat medical setting, including someone of east asian ancestry (ie, someone who might have been wearing a mask even in past years). A few miles away or so, across a local border, it is semi-stalinist covidian goodygooddy nutso land. I exaggerate, but you get my point.
These are my possibly extremely incorrect unrigorous observations. I do however think generalizations have many exceptions according to locale and according to individual.
Good point YYZ
And 85% of “cases” are in people who almost always wear masks
