   Sometimes buy-and-hold, Spock-style does work. Yesterday for the first time in **many** years my FVL.v shares (as FGOFV, in a retirement acct in the US) were in the green — and by such a rather large amount I had to think about taking some profits. (True, the profit has probably been eaten by inflation, but it looked nice on paper–a nice profit for a day.)

   If you look at the chart you can believe me if I write that they had been down to the nuisance level for years, where they were hardly worth anything at all, and I nearly got rid of them, just to clean up the account from having stuff worth little more than zero. After some recent drill hole results the value of the shares went up seemingly too fast, but were still not worth very much, so I didn’t pay more than casual attention. And now..

   I had something similar happen with AZM.v (as AZMTF in a retirement acct), which was down to a trivial sum after I had bought a modest sum in 2016. I nearly got rid of it all just because it was not doing much. After drill results this year it became worth a fair amount. I am now beginning to regret having sold 1/10 to buy other penny stock toys with, not that they are languishing (yet).

   In the past I have had similar successes with the buy-and-hold strategy that Spock at least in the past has urged.

   Nevertheless now I am not so sure buy-and-hold of these penny stocks is a good idea. One has to own too many decent prospects to get a few decent hits. Even if one does overall well, there will be bankruptcies unless one is 100% on top of all of one’s holdings. Brokerages can be a minor nuisance about getting rid of listings of bankrupt companies — the nuisance is much worse if the companies are in DRS or certificated form, at least in the US). Although as in the case of FVL.v (or AZM.v) I knew of no way how the geology or the management had deteriorated, I should have seen that the charts of these companies and their peers had been deteriorating and I should have lightened up. I could have bought a bunch of them back near the bottom. When they were bottoming again you can see them edging up or preparing to move up if you teach yourself. You can miss some, but you can get others, and even the ones you miss you can get on the way up. That’s what I think I’ve learned.

     => Just months ago “Freegold” was almost free. Its shares were priced as if worthless. Just look at that chart.

     => Rather than seeming purely boastful, I would like to note one that got away. My accountant ordered me to get rid of all PFICs last year, at least from non-retirement accts. I don’t want to get into that PFIC topic again, but the PFIC category in US tax law amounts to, to a gross but highly inaccurate approximation, non-US companies that aren’t profitable. I was forced to dump many beloved penny stocks.

     I had to dump TUO.v (TEUTF) from non-retirement acct as its price went down under orders to get rid of PFICs. I guessed that others were better bets to keep in retirement accts so I didn’t sell others to buy it back in them. I certainly guessed wrong on that one. It has taken off. I am no sterling genius.

     Also, I would like to re-emphasize the great number of penny stocks I’ve held that have done really poorly or have done so-so as I had occasional jackpot winners with buy-and-hold.
