The Fourth Turning

   Haven’t read it (yet) but the book is refereed to frequently by John Mauldin of Mauldin Economics, and of course elsewhere.
   There are four turnings, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each turning lasts a generation, or about 20 years.
   The last “winter” was the time of the great depression, followed by a world war.
   Before that the fourth turning culminated in the American civil war.

   According to the authors, the Fourth Turning is a Crisis. This is an era of destruction, often involving war or revolution, in which institutional life is destroyed and rebuilt in response to a perceived threat to the nation’s survival.

   I read a summarised version of this book about 10-15 years ago. To say that Strauss and Howe nailed it, would be an understatement. As a forecaster of the future in my day job, this appealed to me on many levels. To me, it was quite a revelation and brought together a lot of things I’d already been thinking. If you understand and appreciate the cycles we see all around us, every day, this is the ultimate explanation. In short, they told us this was all going to happen and they told us why. For the human race, this is the ultimate, over-arching cycle of birth, life and death that is in the background of all our lives.

   I have the book but found it a very difficult read. In a nutshell, society goes through a tumultuous rebirth (or death) every +/-80 years. It’s much more complicated than that, but that’s the bottom line.

   FGC – I read it when it came out in 1996 – is one of the reasons I moved into investing in commodities after 9/11. We are today only at the beginning of defining what comes next.

   Great book if you are an astute observer of life
