Covid-19 vs World War II
Everything happens for a reason .
As a society we probably needed to slow things down for a while…We have been sailing along at breakneck speed for decades and I think :
Mother Earth was just getting a little dizzy and wobbly from it all and needed a break.
Yes it’s scary and Yes we have major concerns for the economy , and most everyone on the planet of 7.7 billion souls are and will be impacted in some way .
But consider what my parents and most your grandparents had to deal with during the uncertainties of WW II.
That is a period in time that not .00001% of us here experienced nor can relate to . It is a period of time that has all but been forgotten.
Yes we all agree this viral virus is a crisis unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes ..unless you are in your late 80s or 90’s that is ….(the oldest 70’s wouldn’t remember much)
However I think that WW II was 100 times more of a crisis , complete with uncertain outcomes .
It raged and escalated for 6 Years.
Germany Invaded Poland Sept 1 1939 . Armistice Day was Aug 15 1945.
……
During this War we have all been sent to our rooms…and told not to touch our faces or anyone else. So far it has lasted about a month and the duration is uncertain but it will NOT be 6 years !
During THAT war …every family had to send one or many young men to Kill and be killed .
Bludgeoned hacked exploded burned and cut to death by fellow human beings .
Those who remained home had to work long hours for the war effort .
Business and whole industries like travel were shut down for years….
When it was all over , society went on a strong run to better and better and more and more things which has lasted all of my lifetime . 70 years and hopefully counting 🙂
During THIS war :
We expect up to perhaps a million casualties as a very serious case scenario. Which is an unfathomable horror especially since the enemy is mysterious and invisible and kills from the inside out.
During THAT war :
” An estimated total of 70–85 million people perished, which was about 3% of the 1940 world population (est. 2.3 billion).”
“Civilian deaths totaled 50-55 million. Military deaths from all causes totaled 21–25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 5 million prisoners of war.”
The Enemy was well known but no less horrifying.
……………….
A catastrophic event is a catastrophic event !
Comparing it to another catastrophic even doesn’t make it any less so.
But one has to marvel at our parents / grand parents / great grand parents determination and fortitude in overcoming great hardship and solidarity in rapidly rebuilding society and rapidly surpassing what came before.
Something to think about at a moment when we have a lot of time to think.
Looking forward to freedom and back to what we do within the next months.
For now appreciating the finer things finding new and reviving old interests and staying positive is the best medicine .
(Fully Disclaimer : This post comes from a person who named his Pony “Polyanna” 🙂
Quote from the Seattle Times:
“During our working from home we’re being so damn European these days … having home cooked lunches, stores are closing at reasonable hours, people are going out for strolls. What is this, Switzerland?!” wrote Elizabeth Mahan. “All to say, everyone in this country deserves a higher quality of life, and now we know we’re capable of it.”
Well said Fully!
A great reminder of just how much we have to be grateful for.
The direct reason of causation of course is due to a money system based on fiat currency and credit conjured out of thin air. We are witnessing the end game of such a system. Enabled of course by an intellectual frame work called the Phd standard. This system is now coming to an end… its exciting to watch actually.
Regarding the tag line of this post “everything happens for a reason” that’s more metaphysical in nature. It picks up on the second half of the quote I published by Andrew Mellon:
After he prescribed his medicine of liquidating labor, stocks, farmers and real estate, he said: It will purge the rottenness out of the system. High cost of living and high living will come down. People will work harder, live a more moral life. Values will be adjusted, and enterprising people will pick up from the less competent people.
So Fully glad to see you are coming around to Andrew Mellons thinking!
Which present political leader is ready to liquidate labourers and farmers and real estate and pensions ?
That’s nonsense…a pipedream…can’t happen
MMT is the way out of this for now. Take our chances with inflation which still has not happened in spite of all this printing.
Look around you…all those nice people …you tell them it’s good for them to be liquidated…and anyhow they deserve it for not saving.
YOU tell them !
I Second That Emotion
You are correct there are no political leaders willing to do such, of course this is because as a nation and culture we have traveled too far down the path of dishonest money. The masses have been corrupted by that money to understand the universal truth of Mr Mellon’s advice. That shouldn’t mean that we still should not hear it since it is a financial principle.
Stated more simply they can’t stand the pain. All MMT does is plug the hole for a short time transferring wealth from one group to the other. That’s all government can do, they don’t create wealth, only redistribute it. Ultimately MMT leads to the destruction of the currency, which is going to happen anyway since we have traveled too far down this path at this point to reverse it. The current MMT in the form of money to the people is acting as good cover for corporatism. Dangling pittances in front of the public while under cover the corrupt corporations who have spent the last 10 years hollowing out their balance sheets through stock buybacks get the majority of the money.
MMT is no solution it’s just an accelerant to the final outcome
“Everything happens for a reason.”
I’m not so sure Fully is speaking metaphysically here?
My sense is we are talking about the constant state of nature going in and out of balance and re-balancing….Action, reaction and resultant.
It appears to be what we see happening through out all of history and evolution, imbalance/re-balance.
Nature seems to be in constant motion, changing and evolving.
Humans, other animals, plants, microbes, bacteria, viruses all constantly evolving and changing.
All of them going out of balance and back toward some sense of balance, but in an ever changing manner so that what we see is an evolving cycle of imbalance and re-balancing….Cycle, recycle, balance, imbalance…..rinse, repeat but every new cycle influenced by the effects of the previous cycle.
BTW…Texas has on average 155 tornadoes a year! That’s over five months worth every year!
Totally agree, its the ebb and flow of cycles
Wow….this guy Steins1 is good folks….keep an eye on his comments
🙂
Plunger
How many people do the Evil Corporations Employ ?
Even if these people are not getting a lot of money directly , they are keeping their jobs because money ( out of thin air yes)…but money is going to their Corporation.
Same with the money going to the Municipalities and States etc. This keeps Jobs.
WHO is getting all this money ? When a corporation is given Billions does it all go to the board ?
NO…it goes to keep the operation operating…There is NO redistribution of wealth in that…just an attempt to keep the status quo as much as possible
When a Municipality gets bailed out by money from helicopters ..who benefits…all of the municipal employees and pensioners thats who…and the taxpayers too thats who…Does the mayor skim off all this money …NO…again no redistibution of wealth. I do not understand that concept.
Sure jobs will be cut BUT not nearly as many as would be without MMT
Viva La MMT !
Symbiotic relationships in nature.
Symbiosis is a close relationship between species in which at least one species benefits. For the other species, the relationship may be positive, negative, or neutral.
There are three basic types of symbiosis: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism.
Parasitism! LOL!….Maybe we’ll see less of that and more mutualism in the future!

Checkmate.. We have reached the end of the cycle folks. The belief in central banks has become so complete there is no one left to argue with them. When the proprietor of a gold bug site (named Goldtent no less) becomes a fierce fervent advocate for full blown money printing I guess we have either reached nirvana or its time to start headed the other way.
My work is done then!
Your work is never done Sir Plunger
I am just asking ….what is the alternative at this point
There is NONE
So we watch what infinite money printing will do
t worst it creates hyper inflation…but that will take time.
Time is GOOD ! Time to prepare….Time to live it up for a little while longer before the music stops.
I just don’t want to give up yet….we can agree to disagree .
You are certain of the outcome and I am not. That’s all
