Banging pots, music — Vancouver cheers its hospital workers amid coronavirus outbreak.
The West End of Vancouver, around St. Paul’s Hospital, is one of North America’s densest neighborhoods — and lately one of its noisiest.
Its residents, ordered to stay home, are coming out on their balconies each night at 7 p.m. to cheer, bang on pots and do music ?at the shift change at the hospital. Sounds are also heard near Vancouver General Hospital.
The discordant sounds are sweet music in a province that has registered 617 cases of the COVID-19 pandemic as of Tuesday, when an additional 78 were reported. The vast majority have come in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland.
“I think the health care providers here are similar to everywhere else — scared, nervous, worried about lack of supply. . . But no one will abandon patients,” said Dr. Tom Perry, a Vancouver physician and former BC cabinet minister.
St. Paul’s is a bedrock institution. Under Canada’s health care system, basically Medicare for all, it treats addicts from the Downtown East side, as well as residents of luxury high rises next to Stanley Park.
“I live in Vancouver’s West End, tens of thousands of people living in hi rises in a 10X10 block radius,” Rick Walker tweeted. “At 7 o’clock I heard yelling and cheering and banging of pots. Hopefully other cities are doing this, it’s great.”
The cheering, along with much music, has been heard in Italy, and become a ritual in Madrid, with Italy and Spain the worst hit European countries.
The British Columbia government does daily COVID-19 briefings, in which Health Minister Adrian Dix yields the floor to the provincial health officer.
There is no politician pontificating, in Vancouver or in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s daily briefings from Ottawa. Trudeau has to get a million Canadians abroad back home.
Canadians have to wait for some elective surgeries, but are attached to their health care system.
“The concept of equal access for all, high quality, and similar professional duties to all patients are pretty embedded,” Perry said.
That’s fantastic…..
Can’t kill spirit
