   Your charts and comments are apt. All too many of us have felt that a gain was worth nothing unless it was from gold (or perhaps other metals–maybe oil and gas).

   A lesser possible point is that diversification this past decade or so might not have hurt.

   A third point, which could go either way, depending on how things turn out, is that the GDX vs QQQ contest so to speak is not over. If your ratio charts turn down it’s one thing. If they turn up, it’s a matter of a couple of higher lows in recent years.

   A fourth point — neither contrary to your main point nor in support of it — but I think worth bearing in mind — is that some people did better or worse than your indexes might indicate. Some big tech holders undoubtedly did not hold the indexes but rather individual stocks, possibly the wrong ones (some fizzled) or the wrong indexes, and many investors or speculators undoubtedly timed poorly. Similarly, by luck or by skill some precious metal investors or speculators in the past decade have made killings even in poor markets with lucky or astute stock picks or timing (big takeover or discovery) — or unfortunately have been wiped out or nearly so by being particularly bad. It is easy, even for intelligent people, perhaps especially for intelligent people, to fool themselves by attending to clever seeming thoughts rather than what actually is going on — as your charts should remind us.
