   Where should I understand the base to be? Those 3 points sticking up? Sorry for being obtuse.

       I’m sorry, but I do not understand the criteria for “base.” I did a lot of do-it-myself teaching of TA, looking and analyzing data and finding signs and patterns on my own without studying much what others had said or written. I reinvented many wheels and do not know the names for many things. Therefore I may not appreciate what is meant by “base.”

       Also, the lines both end right at the present? Or do they continue to the right into the future–in other words, are we still in the wide base? How do we know when the base is over?

       On the left side, the lower line starts to the left of the right line, in other words earlier. Do we count the beginning of the base as half way between the two? Or is the base somewhat pyramidally shaped, at least on the left rather than rectangularly shaped? By what criteria are the left end points decided I wonder.

       It all seems rather counterintuitive to me, but much that is both correct and well accepted is counterintuitive. There is a fairly huge amount of sharp up and down — especially towards the beginning and the end — compared to time. I would have not thought of that as “base”, but as I noted I am self-taught mainly by having played with data on spreadsheets not reading what other people have written and not necessarily using set proper definitions used by the rest of the world. I would on my own have thought of “base” as an epoch where relatively little was happening in price change per unit time throughout the epochh (could be rather precisely defined mathematically). A “big move” from a base would then be one that would be large for a unit of time compared to a move typical for that unit of time for the base.

         …whereas the move we now see (if we count the move since the low) is approximately equivalent in magnitude to the move up since the beginning of the “base” if defined as the beginning of the lower horizontal line. If the move is the move above the upper horizontal line, it is in fact far less in magnitude than various other moves.
