   One observation from the chart,
   If someone bought after June 19 gap, would have felt the volatility, any price bought with stop loss of buying price had been stopped, only if the SL less the gap would have survived.
   One would be stopped out many times, if someone trades. If someone holds , he had to deal with price reaching his initial buy price. Who ever bought before that are lucky.

     Trading is tough and in an impulse move.

     Many will try it. Some success will embolden them and they will get smacked sooner or later

     I know from experience…mostly negative…. that trading or hedging in these moves will eventually piss you off.

   I miss the good old days from around the beginning of July and earlier. The recent volatility I suppose is great for traders, but it was so much more pleasant back then by comparison, at least for a lazier creature like me. Even the low around the end of May was nice. It was a nice orderly low, above prior lows, as was the low in the accompanying TSI. Nice and calm, relatively speaking. I didn’t feel as if I had to think as much back then before the recent rise.

   Under the current set of conditions, in contrast, I tend to feel like the perpetual stretched out, contorted fool. I feel as if I should be doing something, but I don’t know what. Is it A or the opposite of A that I should be doing? “Don’t just sit there! Do something!” I keep hearing from myself.

   For someone who does not do a lot of short-term trading I take some comfort looking at long-term trends and at individual companies’ strengths so as not to take forced actions unnecessarily. However I do try to review many charts in different time frames at least weekly so as not to get lulled into unnecessary huge losses.

   Just thinking onto the screen to clarify my thoughts. There are so very many different ways of doing things successfully.

     For most of us Karl….doing NOTHING is the hardest BUT Best thing we can do for our Portfolios

       As I noted, there are many ways of being successful (even more of being unsuccessful).

       What I tend to do — I think it’s an advantage of having an overly-full portfolio as opposed to having index-type-stuff and maybe some options — is that when moves get to me so that I get antsy I adjust the portfolio rather than doing NOTHING.

       If it’s going down uncomfortably, I’ll think about this or that stock, “Is it really as good as I thought?” or “Should I maybe sell it because of tax consequences?” and then sell some or all of it. As I do my thinking I’ll have noticed some others that I wished I’d invested in or invested more in, and if the market turns, I’ll have my cash ready–or maybe I just go ahead and buy then and there. I don’t make many changes. Maybe just 1-3 –just changes around the edges. It’s a way of doing nothing or almost nothing while maybe keeping the junk from accumulating. One way of doing things.

       I hope that if I’m smart enough and many of them start looking less than attractive I’ll sell a lot of them.

   We took a hit way back in early August. I panicked and sold everything, thinking we had been snookered again. Two days later, I bought it all back as I keep reading “This is a bull market.” Vomatility, yup. Even if you are not trading, it can give you the willies. This time, I did not sell, and I don’t plan to. The only way to win with the bull is to STAY IN IT. Until I hear Plunger, Rambus, Fully, Northstar and a few others that the bull was fake and it’s over, I’ll keep holding. And buying whenever I can. Like now.
