Hello Subway Stacker
I took a trip to Deepest darkest Downtown Toronto today.
I drove to and took the Subway from its terminus.
First time on the subway in 40 years.
Its real nice.
There were just a few people in my car. I noticed one fellow about my age with a bag on his lap and he was counting coins in several vials. I heard him utter something as he continued to crack open the vials and count the shiny large coins.
I had to go over at risk of scaring him and tell him I was a goldbug and had once been a stacker too.
We had a great conversation. he has collected coins since childhood. Now buys and sells. I invited him to Goldtent. he was excited. he didn’t know another soul with his passion for Precious metals
We talked a lot about miners. He mentioned Franco Nevada and Barkerville amongst others.

The Coins?…They were Uncirculated mint condition Pre 1965 Canadian Half Dollars…each worth about $6.50 today.
Beauties.
Thanks for that story Fully, appreciated.
I am sure one or two of the others in the car saw him as just a strange fellow.
I to met a really neat goldbug in Toronto a few months ago:-)
Hi Optional…I actually lied….THAT was the first time in 40 years I was on the subway. 🙂
I didn’t think social differences between the US and Canada were so extreme! I don’t think I’m unusually cautious. Maybe there are cities in the US w/ subways where people would react differently from the way I do, and maybe even in the largest and toughest US cities some people flaunt large wads of cash–but
I’d never think of pulling out anything related to money in a US subway (and I’ve ridden them frequently every year for decades in 1 or 2 big cities). Maybe I’d take out bus fare for the next leg of the journey, but that’s it. I would not want any onlookers associating me with money, even rolls of non-PM coins. I’d be particularly wary on a nearly empty car. All but 1 get out at the next stop, leaving me alone with….
Decades ago I heard the ploy of at least pretending to read the Bible on the subway so that one’s attackers might be scared of eternal perdition if they were to attack. More recently I’ve read that nowadays those who want to annoy or dismember don’t care so much about such things so the methodology is less likely to work. Just staring at the wall or maybe at the phone (which you presumably don’t mind having stolen–everyone seems to have one) is better.
Must be awfully nice up there. Need to visit again.
LOL
I did see this as quite strange . I bet his stash was worth thousands. But they were just coins to any potential crook
Anyhow Yes I believe you could count hundred dollar bills and no one would look at you. Very Nice folks for the most part up here.
I did see 2 derelects talking to anybody and everybody , but they seemed harmless.
I was amazed at how comfortable efficient clean and quiet the TTC Subway was.
45 years ago when I was in university I was part of a study done by my friend for sociology class.
He asked me to dress like a bum..that was easy….and fall down on the subway when it was in motion to see if anybody would come to my assistance. I was a long hair hippy looking guy and we rode the subway for hours doing this while my buddy sat nearby recording ( pen and paper…before video) people’s reactions. NObody was disrespectful but also nobody offered me any assistance. They we had a clean cut guy do the same … he received more sympathy . But of course the Cute gal was immediately assisted every time .
Memories
Interesting, but a fairly sad reflection on society.
