   Naive musing about my bewilderment when the supreme wiseguys buy what seem to be not-so-great companies:

   When I read about successful mega-bigshots buying what seems at best questionable when there are other alternatives, I never know what to make of it. For the sake of argument, assume that in this as in most cases there is not some extraordinary hidden legitimate value that I’m missing–I doubt there is when these guys buy into something questionable in the PM bizz.

   Is it that they just aren’t that bright when it comes to the PM bizz? Is it that they think PMs are garbage so it doesn’t really matter much which piece of apparent junk they buy? (I have learned through humiliating experience that my skills in the PM markets are limited, but I’d know enough to be reluctant to invest gazillions in ABX if I had gazillions.)

   Or is it that there is some special insider type of special (sneaky) intrinsic value in the situation that is real? For example, do they make enough just by publicizing their entry and then selling quietly? Do they have positions in some weird OTC derivatives based on curves of prices that their purchases drive, or are there sleazy deals (“if you buy ABX and publicize it I’ll let you have some of this on the cheap, and then let’s join in and screw the shareholders of that company over there together”, or simply “We need to get ABX price up more, so we hope you will do the right thing…”)? Is there some ABX deal pending?

   Why ABX when there are alternatives when Soros is supposed to be on top of things? And not just Soros and ABX this one time.
