Goldballoon…do you know of this place ?
Yes, I was in Chongqing in 1986, My wife and I stayed a couple of days there and then went down the Yangtze River to Wuhan. This took three amazing and indescribable days, passing through the famous Three Gorges, long before the Three Gorges Dam was built (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Gorges).
Whereas the videos you linked show Chongqing to be strange and super-modern now, in 1986 it was at the opposite end of the spectrum. China in general and Chongqing specifically were not very far advanced from the Dark Ages, worlds away from what it’s like now. Everyone wore Mao suits (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_suit), the coal smoke air pollution was beyond your imagination and everything was dark, broken down and dilapidated. Of course, this was because it was only 10 years after the Cultural Revolution and we saw the effects of this on China, which was still at the very bottom of the hole it dug. As I say, you can’t imagine what it was like, nor how fast it changed from that point. When I returned to China the next time, in 1992, couldn’t believe the massive changes that had taken place.
If ever I digitize the slides I have from the 1986 China trip, I’ll share them with you.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE HOW THEY TRANSFORMED THAT CITY !
THANKS GB
