Microsoft/Open AI & Sam & Greg
This whole affair leading to Sam and Greg joining Microsoft means this new venture to develop a competing processor to those from Nvdia will happen faster than it would have at Open AI. While the billions that Microsoft poured into OpenAI (largely to accomplish this) are basically a writeoff now, they will spend even more billions to develop it in house instead. Only a small speed bump that will probably bring it about even faster in the long run and give Microsoft total control. They won’t have to share it with competitors. https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/stunning-reversal-openai-board-talks-sam-altman-return-ceo-after-satya-nadella-furious
AS I originally speculated in my first comment when the news broke on Fri. nite. this may have been Microsoft’s plan all along. Did they create this board coup and Nadella feign outrage because it was the only way they could get these two (and the many who will probably quit OpenAI and join Microsoft) without a protracted legal battle? It looks like a 3D chess move that might have come from Putin or Trump. Not only do they get this new faster AI chip process in house where it doesn’t have to be shared but they get plausible deniability because they can point to the billions invested in OpenAI that they won’t get a return on. However, one of the articles pointed out that most of the cash hasn’t yet been wired to them and the largest part of Microsoft’s investment was in the form of cloud computing credits for Azure. Microsoft comes out on top across the board.
