Almost Half Of All Young Adults In The United States Are Living With Their Parents

   So busy today. But I really have to post a comment on this article from Michael Snyder. Mike writes the usual fear parade in his article and rues the day that young people discovered they were unable to flee the family home and strike out on their own. He states “needless to say, this is not a good thing for our society” in reference to the vast numbers of youth who now live with their parents.

   On the flip side of the coin however there are many who regret that familes don’t live together. They feel the breakdown of the family is one of the key sources of problems in our society and they wish for more traditional relationships. Here in Africa its common to see large extended families all together in a single home. These can be five generations deep from Great Grandmothers down to the most recent babies.

   But its economics. Given financial freedom a great many African children would also flee the family home and live alone or with a spouse if they could afford a place of their own. That is human nature. So these large extended familes are essentially forced on young people due to a lack of income and opportunity. Not because the love is so deep between them or respect for parents all that prevalent.

   America and other Western countries may be embarking on a trend change in their living arrangements in other words. What is starting as a notable arrangement of youth living with parents and many thinking its just a temporary blip may well eventually lead to young couples marrying and staying in the family home permanently. That will get us to a common three-generation household within a decade or two.

   If that’s where this is going then we are truly looking at a monumental social reversion in freedoms formerly held by youth and what this portends for home prices and consumption will shock most people. Because this is really about a more general impoverishment of families and a loss of their prior standard of living. In Ethiopia I have witnessed as many as 7 and 8 people living in a tiny single room that could barely hold the mattresses of the occupants. Like fourty square feet. Obviously that is the extreme version of where this trend can take us, but its real and its already seen across this continent wherever you find poor levels of employment and high costs of living.

   Welcome to the Third World. Hope you like your family. You may be stuck with them for a long, long time.
