I went to the Remembrance Day ceremony at the cenotaph here in Toronto (Scarborough). There was the usual crowd you see each year but this time much more masking than last year. This year there was a lengthy reciting of “public health guidelines” at the beginning of the ceremony and there was noticeable laughter coming from not all but a significant number of folks in the crowd. It reached a sudden crescendo when the MC read, “and please refrain from singing the anthems”. To me it was nothing more than the sincerest statement of contempt for the government’s covid policies although clearly not unanimous. I had no idea so many people (30%?) thought these “guidelines” were just laughable. This of course is why the government doesn’t want large gatherings; they don’t want us to know that the resistance, although technically a minority, is a good sized chunk of our community which is too big for the government to deal with all at a once. Their only hope is that we’ll never know how strong we are and how weak they are. Something to remember for sure.
