But, yes I think it’s possible they were related. The father of Groucho Marx was Jewish and was born in Mertzwiller in the Alsace (now in France), and Karl Marx was stemming from a Jewish family from Trier, a town in the Prussian Empire just north of the French border. The two places are about 180 km apart. I don’t know if there has been any genealogical research on the Marx family and if all people named Marx have a common origin, but it seems likely there is a link.

You are having fun. Your remark however is not really precise in that there is hardly anything of Marx in MSNBC. The remark is perhaps a little bit correct in that, as I noted within the past week, Marx commented, ‘I am not a Marxist.’
Marx was against having large corporations and large owners in charge of things and the propagation of their ideologies as being the only ideologies to be allowed.
There is plenty of confusion nowadays. People in charge, the megaowners and their State tools benefit by putting each other against each other and allowing words to get exaggerated so as to cause antagonisms between people who might instead of fighting each other fight those who are exploiting both.
If an insult word is desired, might I suggest for MSNBC as fairly useful that people of multiple factions can agree on: “fascist” or “neo-fascist”. The term “fascist” is perhaps over-used, and sloppily used, but it is generally appropriate, and perhaps especially to the centrist “Democratic Party” type of stuff of MSNBC. It refers to the coordination of large corporations and the State, especially the military, often with significant racial or ethnic overtones, often combined with propaganda campaigns about attacking other countries depicted as in some senses not sufficiently human or superhuman to be left alone. With MSNBC the racism is inverted from white only to the identitatarian racism of MSNBC, CNN, the “Democratic” Party etc. The fascism is not the pure nationalistic fascism of the past but one of huge globalistic entities operating through multiple states, but that was true of prior fascisms.
Poor Marx did not go for this sort of stuff as far as I can tell any more than he predicted TV or had much to do with vaccines. I haven’t read all his works, but I read quite a lot. Or do you have some references?

I don’t understand unless you are saying by “marxist dogma” that which is **against** what one reads in Marx. That would make some sense. “Marxist dogma” is more or less oxymoron since he and Engels argued against ideology as ideology but rather sticking to the facts; also control by populations from below, not by uncontrolled State or by corporations. (The various governments that have called themselves “marxist” also called themselves “democratic” and “democratic republics” — all rather dishonestly in my opinion.) If you perhaps mean to say, “veering towards totalitarianism” or “fascistic” I get it. But I don’t get the “marxist dogma”. That is not a particularly informative way of putting it. It doesn’t make sense unless seen as disinformation or misinformation on top of layers of lies and misinformation or misunderstanding. The totalitarian stalinist countries have given all sorts of BS on the topic for decades of what constitutes “Marxist” (almost 180 degrees opposite). All sorts of academicians of all stripes have as well. All sorts of elites and statists have. There is unbelievable distortion, obscuration, and disinformation from all sides, for a century. Or am I missing something and is there a good reference justifying a use of “marxist dogma” here?

One doesn’t necessarily need to be a participant in abhorent activity to be a controlled person – sometimes simply being a witness to something can be an effective means of instilling fear and thus control (beyond comprehension) – a key motivator of children to preserve their own personal well being but also for adults who likely have relations who could be at risk. Especially if demonstrated by a group, the feeling of powerlessness can be overwhelming to an individual no matter how influential, powerful or seemingly independant they might appear to the outside world. No idea if this applies to Gates but I believe relevant to this thread and something to consider.
Since this post specifically discusses Karl Marx and Karl, once again joined in to defend him and his philosophy, which he has done a million times when it isn’t even relevant to the topic of most posts, I ask Karl. Why did you choose Karl as your “handle” and why do you constsantly invoke and defend Marx? I for one would like to see no one use the term Marxism or Marxist on any future posts if it keeps Karl from ever bringing him up again in any of his comments.
I did not choose “Karl”. FGC chose it for me. I think he may have done so after some correspondence where I noted that someone started a publication–failed immediately–that he wanted me to contribute a column for as something like “Remarks from a Right Wing Marxist” (though I am more left than right and not an anything “-ist”. Or it may have been because I noted that it was after reading a passage in V. 3 of Capital that I decided to make a big bet on gold once I had money. The passage describes how when profits stagnate, credit becomes more important, then scams, then things fall apart, then there’s clamor for cash, finally gold.
There have been lots of cover-ups of Marx by many, including the leninists, who are essentially enemies of Marx IMO.
So, no, I did not call myself “Karl”. Fully did. It is not good to make false assumptions. It is not good to lie to one’s self or to assume as true the lies, confusions, and obfuscations of others, whether recent ones or longstanding ones.
I can plead guilty to trying to correct the false, and not doing it perfectly. A better writer could do it more clearly even though sometimes truth is not simple, especially after generations of propaganda. However even presented best it does not come honey-coated exactly as one wants to hear, exactly according to the buzz of one’s self-limited little ideological Party-Line hive.
Now who is the one assuming? I have no honey coated party line that I want to hear. Look at my posts and comments. I am not affiliated with any party and lean libertarian. I judge each issue on it’s merits. Yes, I almost always comment against democrats because they are corrupt, career politicians who want to tell and force people to do what they believe is best instead of letting people make their own decisions about their own lives. Freedom and individual accountability and responsibility. That is the only “party line” I adhere to. Don’t tell me about corrupt Republicans, sure there are some as well but they are on the correct side of more issues than not. Since we only have two choices we must take the lesser of two evils.
