Sir JSK,
Allow me to give a very simple analogy.
Growing up in India, in the 1980s and 1990s:
(i) There were no private radio or TV channels … only government owned media
(ii) Communal riots were a frequent occurrence
(iii) As soon as things got a little out of control, meaning the local police were not able to control the rioters/arsonists, the State Governments used to seek the help of the military/army, especially when curfews were violated. The army was given “shoot-at-sight” orders to take out anyone who violated the curfew.
(iv) As soon as the military was deployed, the government media used to one phrase: “situation is tense but under control” a.k.a. the lack of normalcy is transitory
(v) Even as a kid and later an adolescent, I figured out that whenever the above pattern of events repeated, the statement in (iv) above was a lie. That is, the situation was dire. Nothing was under control.
The same applies to the inflation story in the USA today.
Sir JSK,
Many thanks for reading my reply.
I live in Northern California / Silicon Valley / Bay Area. I have been here since Nov. 1998 when I left New Delhi.
