RIP EVs
Did Joe Biden genuinely believe he could force all of America into becoming granola-eating electric-car users, despite an absolute lack of any infrastructure whatsoever, skyrocketing costs, and without comprehending how rural America functions? Yes. It seems he did, and as is often the case with all things Joe “thinks” about, the outcome was a complete debacle. Now, we’re watching the car industry come to a realization many of us had months ago: Americans aren’t keen on electric vehicles. Companies such as Ford, Honda, and GM are now re-evaluating their visions of an “electric car utopia” that once envisioned phasing out gasoline-powered vehicles entirely.

“I built my first EV (a motorcycle) in college in 1974; out of a junk bike two old car batteries and some electronics. The trick is to fit the use with the machine, whatever it is. I only had to drive around campus for a few miles, and it served me well for about 10 years. Currently I charge my EV on my solar array and it seems to do just fine driving me around the towns in upstate NY. If I have to go farther or take a heavy load I use the right vehicle, my pickup truck. Just match the machine to the work. No tyranny, no propaganda just engineering.”

“And there you have it: the only way to afford the luxury of an EV is if you can also afford the necessity of a gas vehicle.”
Using current lithium-ion battery technology, I think that hybrids (gas/electric power) are a good option for passenger vehicles.
Toyota has been showing the way since 1997 with their fuel efficient and extremely reliable Toyota Prius models.

AAA provides a calculator that can be to determine the true costs (per mile) for a new or used vehicle in dollars per mile.
When a checked the costs per mile for a new 2024 Toyota Prius LE 4-dr hatchback with a MSRP of $27,850, assuming 15,000 miles per year, the calculator estimated 54 cents per mile.
Not too bad, but this is considerably more than what it typically costs me per mile for older Toyota vehicles that I purchase and work on myself.
