Cramer says ‘government was a bad actor,’ allowing big retailers to get even bigger in coronavirus crisis
This is one of the issues that made no sense. Why all the big box stores stay open like Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, groceries, etc. but not a sand and gravel operation where there is little customer contact?
“If you were Walmart, the thing you would most want to do is have the government shut down your competition, and that happened,” Cramer said on “Squawk Box.”
Walmart, for example, reported its fiscal first quarter earnings on Tuesday, showing online sales that rose 74% year-over-year and same-store sales surging by 10%.
This is a conspiracy that I can wrap my head around, government supporting the corporation.
It is after all, a government by the corporation.
Subvert the system, buy from small business!
I know many that continued to operate nearly the entire lock down.
A construction company whose CEO regularly went on conservative news shows to appeal to President Trump was awarded a $1.28 billion contract to build a large section of the border wall in Arizona earlier this month.
I thought construction was an “essential” service. Construction has continued around here (Virginia) throughout the lockdown as did local hardware stores.
Unless the government wants to deliver food to folk’s houses, grocery stores had to stay open. With everyone wearing masks, practicing social distancing and being quick about it, the only folks that were in danger from the time exposure required to get infected were … the grocery store workers.
I think now that most sane people are educated about the dangers, we can open back up and see what happens. The super spreader events (concerts, ball games, conferences, any big events) are in real trouble for the foreseeable future. I still don’t see how most restaurants and bars are going make it.
We will make it
My wife runs a restaurant and Inn.
We are not giving up.
We are making adjustments to the backyard patio and will be busier than ever …People cannot travel so they will be dinning out even more at their local favorite restaurant. People will adjust and some will dine at 4 PM etc
But to Stein’s point…small business that can service one or two customers at a time did NOT have to be shut down.
Support your local small businesses…

In Wash state, construction was locked down but funny, big construction didn’t comply:

I agree with most of your points. My point is that many small businesses had to close that had WAY less in their ability to have contact between their employees or customers.
I talked to many of them, being a small business that continued to work.
Cramer’s point is well taken by me!
Although in person dining was locked down, all of our local restaurants and wineries were open for take out. We bought dinners every weekend at the place where my daughter works (a local brewery with great food), a local Thai place, and a couple places we used to go regularly. Plus we bought a bunch of wine from the local vineyards (a lot!). I think we are spending more money n food than before the lockdown!!
While I agree that the lockdown was unfair to some businesses, at the same time we have to recognize that no one knew what we were dealing with. The swine flu (h1n1) in the usa lasted ~ 16 months and caused ~12,500 deaths. We are at almost 95,000 covid-19 caused deaths in 3 months!!!!
