Complete and utter rubbish.
Look up the total value of US auto imports over recent years, annually.
Not one year over $200 billion, in total. Under 7m units per year.
To collect a trillion, those quantities would have to stay the same, while auto prices increase about 7 fold to yield that result.
6.5 m x $150,000 per car.
I think he is claiming the net net to the Economy including Tariff Income Manufacturing Jobs etc will approach 1 Trillion
Europe’s car industry is fucked already. Canada doesn’t have a car industry, Ontario and Quebec do by virtue of corrupt government deals to ensure employment and taxes in the only two provinces that count to corrupt federal governments, ensuring that Canada will cave. The U.S. deal with Mexico is cheap labour for employment. Take it away, and the BRICS become quite attractive. If this tariff were to be in play for long, American car companies will raise prices dramatically, there by reducing much of the incentive to restore jobs. On the whole this is a dumb proposal for domestic auto production, but a smart one to get countries to reduce their tariffs. Trump would have been smarter to mirror tariffs that other countries impose. It’s an easy argument to make. People should remember, this ain’t Trumps first tariff rodeo. He got lots of promises of investment last time too. The results over time were minimal. Businesses are quite willing to tell Trump what he wants to hear. In a few years he’ll be gone.
